Neck and Back Injuries (Soft Tissue)
Most vehicle accidents (especially rear end collisions) almost always involve some degree of neck and back injury. Sports accidents, diving or swimming pool accidents, and many other types of accidents also involve neck or back injury. Even accidents that appear relatively minor at the time may have long-term neck and/or back injury consequences.

Soft Tissue Injuries
Any accident that causes the neck and back to move forcefully (whiplash) can cause injury of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and disks in the back and neck. These are known, generally, as soft tissue injuries — in contrast to broken bones that are easily visible on x-rays.
Soft tissue injuries include torn or injured cervical or back muscles, pulled or torn tendons and ligaments, ruptured disks, herniated disks and radiculopathy, pinched nerves, compressed nerves, back strain, sciatica, and spinal stenosis (compression and narrowing). Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, headaches, grogginess, blurred vision, memory and concentration loss, and limited movement in the affected area. More serious injuries can cause radiating pain (traveling pain) and even temporary or permanent paralysis.
Legal Challenges
Soft tissue neck and back injuries can be severely debilitating, but have historically been difficult to “prove” because they are not visible on x-rays, nor on some MRIs, CT scans and ultrasound devices. Nevertheless, soft tissue injuries can be just as painful and disabling as other kinds of neck and back injuries including interfering with a victim’s ability to work or function. Also, soft tissue injuries can require significant treatment, including osteopathic and/or chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic massage, surgical procedures (disk removal, spinal fusion, rods, plates, screws), medication and, often, on-going physical therapy. Many times a person will have prior back or neck problems that are aggravated by a new accident or injury.
The Compensation You Deserve
Medical bills, on-going care and therapy, loss of income, quality of life issues, and pain and suffering are very real issues for victims of soft tissue neck injuries. If someone else was at fault in causing the circumstances of your back or neck injury, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, medical equipment, loss of income, ongoing care, loss of enjoyment of life, physical therapy, retraining, pain and suffering and other damages. It is important to choose a personal injury lawyer who is well experienced with severe injury cases, to help ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve.
